Indie-folk duo Penny & Sparrow have unveiled their latest album, Lefty, released on January 31 via I Love You / Thirty Tigers. Comprised of Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke, the pair have built up a devoted following over the last decade, earning recognition from NPR Music, Wonderland Magazine, and Atwood Magazine. They’ve supported acts like Josh Ritter and The Shouting Matches, while performing at iconic venues such as the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and Stubb’s in Austin. Their reach extends globally, with shows in London, Paris, and Berlin.
Meeting as college roommates in Austin, Texas, they started covering songs before transitioning into songwriting and live performances. Their music, influenced by Simon & Garfunkel, Bon Iver, and Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, blends indie folk, chamber pop, and introspective storytelling.
Lefty is an ambitious 20-track odyssey, recorded in a friend’s garden shed and masterfully weaves between acoustic ballads, chamber pop and glitchy electronica. Tracks like ‘Mattering Ram’ and ‘Alphabet’ showcase their intimate lyricism, while experimental cuts such as ‘Sea Foam’ and ‘Idea Baby’ push sonic boundaries.
The duo shared: “Lefty is a long collection of both real and made up things. We wrote poetry, true stories, literary fan fiction, horror, erotica, slice-of-life, vignettes, dream scenarios, saloon conversations, elegies, a toast, a few confessions and at least two love letters. All of them belong together because each one is an extension of us, of the things we love. We are the ties that bind Lefty.”
