Suzu Toyama released her single ‘Nobody Now’ on May 27, 2026, taken from her album Spin. Born in 2006, Toyama relocated to the UK alone at age ten, spending eight years immersed in a new culture before returning to Japan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she taught herself guitar and began writing songs, leading to a series of self-directed performances, art films, and independent releases. Her previous self-produced albums include 16 sixteen, black hole, sun, and swim, each project interweaving music, visual art, and personal experiences to paint a picture of her identity as an artist. In 2024, she performed at FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL at eighteen, later opening for Mei Semones on her Japan tour in January 2026 before recording Spin in Onomichi.

At the heart of the single is the electric guitar, its steady lines carving out space for the euphonium’s deep, resonant undertones. Layered vocals drift in, weaving textures that enrich the soundscape without overshadowing the melody. The production glows with warmth, yet leaves room for subtle shifts in phrasing and dynamics to shine through, giving the track an intimate, close-knit atmosphere.

‘Nobody Now’ is the first time Toyama has used songwriting as a direct lens for self-examination, moving beyond songwriting as mere outlet. Her self-taught process favors emotional precision over strict structure, letting each piece develop from mood and atmosphere. Her vocals carry smoky clarity, recalling the emotional honesty of Rickie Lee Jones and Laura Nyro.

Suzu Toyama shared: “Nobody Now” is about the feeling of losing your place in someone’s world and learning to accept the silence that follows. It’s a reflection on loneliness, change, and the moments when you feel invisible, but also on finding strength within that uncertainty. For me, it’s one of the most honest songs I’ve written.
