Interview with rock band The New America

The New America are bakers of heartfelt, scuzzy noise rock. Born, bred, and braided in Bristol; these four young bread smiths aim to nourish with noise. Having shared stages with some of the city’s toastiest acts, The New America has recently begun making a name for themselves.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?

Like being punched in the face and like it.

Which three albums have influenced you the most creatively?

IDLES – Brutalism, Speaking in Tounges – Talking Heads, Grammy Nominees 2005 – Various Artists

Tell us about the key pieces of equipment that you use to define your sound?

Marshall backline, Death by Audio pedals, offset guitars

Is there any “non-musical” ingredient that is essential to crafting your sound?

Friendship, Love and a nice walk on a summers day

Studio work and music creation, or performing and interacting with a live audience, which do you prefer?

Performing Live, we enjoy the studio but nothing beats a live gig.

What has been your most memorable performance so far?

We played the Mothers Ruin in Bristol, we didn’t know the bands that we supported but they called us up literally the night before and asked us to play, at the time we were in Southampton for a gig and saw a band called Dead Naked Hippies and Straight Girl who were looking for a support act to save the bristol night of their UK tour, so we thought we’d go along.

And which performance would you prefer to forget?

None of them! We wear our scars on our sleeves which makes us more complete human beings

Any new or emerging artists on your radar?

Football FC, Belishas, Sans, Sapphire Blues.  All amazing bristol bands!

If you could collaborate with, or perform alongside any artist, who would it be? And why?

Milos Planes

If you weren’t a musician what would you be?

Incredibly bored

Trent Reznor once said “To me, rock music was never meant to be safe. I think there needs to be an element of intrigue, mystery, subversiveness. Your parents should hate it.” What are your thoughts on this statement?

Actually our parents are cooler than we are, Alis dad got him into IDLES, if it wasn’t for Alis dad he would only listen to Grammy Nominees 2005 – Various Artists

Tell us about any upcoming shows or releases you have in the pipeline.

Our new single Papillon is out on April 22nd. Before COVID-19 ruined the entire world we had lots of gigs lined up, but currently, August 28th is our next one for StagFest in Bristol.
