Swedish duo Southside Café, made up of vocalist Anders Ljung and producer/songwriter Johan R. Norberg, have just released their most ambitious work yet with ‘Like Sparks From the Sun’. Based in southern Sweden, the two come from different backgrounds that fit well together. Ljung has spent years singing everywhere from dive bars and churches to street corners and big stages, building a voice known for its power and empathy. Norberg left music for a while to focus on academics, but was drawn back by his love of melodies. For the past two years, they have put their energy into writing new songs, always seeking fresh ideas and perfecting every detail. After their recent album For Current and the Tide, this single feels like the best result of their hard work, helping them build a loyal following in Scandinavia and beyond.

‘Like Sparks From the Sun’ starts quietly, with soft guitars and gentle dynamics, then builds into a powerful rock sound. Ljung’s vocals stand out right away, moving from a gentle tone to a strong, emotional delivery. Norberg’s production adds layers but leaves room for each melody to stand out. The song hints at influences from Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, and U2, but does not rely on old sounds. Instead, it creates its own style, offering a fresh and clear take on 90s alt-rock.

The duo starts their writing with melody and works until every lyric feels meaningful, personal, honest, and direct. ‘Like Sparks From the Sun‘ shows this approach, with thoughtful verses leading into powerful choruses, all based on real experiences and quiet confidence. This single is the best sign yet that Southside Café is becoming one of the most interesting new rock bands from Scandinavia.
